Senior Continuous Care Program

Your regular dental visits are more important now than ever! You are not just getting a cleaning. To address this situation, we at MY BEST SMILE have designed a Senior Continuous Care Program to keep your mouth its healthiest.

After treating your dental needs for so many years, it makes us all sad when we hear that you will be retiring and are losing your dental insurance. This seems to frequently translate into “I won’t be able to afford dentistry.”

Nothing is further from the truth. Prevention is inexpensive. Neglect is expensive. Will you quit changing the oil in your car because you are now retired? Regular maintenance for anything is always the most cost-effective.

Your continued oral health is more important now than ever. If you have a heart condition or been diagnosed with diabetes, keeping any infections at bay is paramount. This includes dental infections due to gum disease, abscess, and tooth decay. Any time your body has to combat chronic, long-term infection, it compromises your overall health, especially your heart.

When you need to take multiple prescriptions for various medical conditions, developing a dry mouth is very common. This decrease in saliva production causes a drop in the pH of your mouth. Your mouth is now more acidic. The increase in acid attacks makes your teeth, especially the exposed roots, more likely to decay. We can recommend different dental products to help you maintain you oral health.

Saliva is our body’s natural mouth lubricant. It washes away food debris and constantly bathes the teeth, which keeps them from drying out. When there is a decrease in the amount of saliva, the teeth become sensitive. And in extreme cases, fracturing occurs.

A lack of saliva also causes complications with swallowing. When we chew our food, it mixes with saliva, making it wetter and easier to swallow. If not enough saliva is present to wet the food, you may start eliminating healthy foods you need and compromise your overall health. Also, the food that is not swallowed sticks to your teeth, which makes you more prone to tooth decay.

A reduction in saliva and ultimate decrease in lubrication and drop in pH makes your mouth more susceptible to oral lesions, such as ulcers. Oral cancer and soft tissue screenings, done annually, make sure all these tissues are evaluated and any changes are addressed.
