On behalf of Drs. Kokai, Feduska and the office staff, we would like to congratulate you for deciding to quit smoking! Deciding to quit is one of, if not the most, important decision you will make regarding your health and the health of others around you. We are here to support you every step along the way.
Preparing to Quit
Step 1: You have already made the most important first step by deciding to quit.
Step 2: Set a quit date within the next two weeks. If possible, choose a time where your stress levels will be relatively low.
Step 3: Tell your family, friends and co-workers of your decision and ask for their support throughout the process
Step 4: Remove all tobacco products from your personal space (cigarettes, ashtrays, lighters, etc.) Having these items around may trigger habits and make quitting more difficult.
Step 5: Anticipate Challenges. Quitting will not be easy, but you can do it! Expect challenges, especially during the first few weeks. Preparing yourself for these challenges will make them easier to get through.
During your Quitting Process
Abstinence is essential! Even one puff will make quitting MUCH more difficult and may even cause a full relapse.
Take your prescription. Our doctors will prescribe medication to assist in reducing the symptoms associated with quitting. These medications reliably increase long-term abstinence rates among patients.
Supplement your prescription with an over-the-counter nicotine replacement. Nicotine patches and gum may both be used along with your prescribed medication. Evidence suggests that combining therapies is more effective in producing long-term abstinence.
Avoid drinking alcohol. Alcohol is one of the most common triggers of relapse.
Review and remind yourself how quitting has improved your life. Quitting will likely reduce the effects of aging, improve your senses of taste and smell, set a good example for others around you (children, etc.), improve self-esteem and save you money! Most importantly, it will greatly improve your overall health!
We urge you to follow these guidelines as closely as possible in order to reach your goal of being smoke free. Remember, we are here to support you along the way and are very proud of your decision to quit! Good luck and please let us know if you need anything.
